Does the payment reference prove the purpose of the transfer?¶
No. A reference can suggest or link a purpose but cannot establish it without evidence of who created the wording and what transaction lay behind it.
Innocent-looking text is not independent proof¶
“Rent,” “loan,” “gift” or “invoice” may be accurate, copied, reused, mistaken or false. A merchant can generate a value, or a payer can enter it. Different parties may display different descriptions without their records conflicting.
Corroborate the proposed explanation¶
Preserve the exact field and creation route. Compare contracts, invoices, messages, emails, orders, delivery, witnesses and onward movement. A unique reference can locate records; a repeated one across victims or accounts may identify a common process.
State that the payment carried the reference, then explain supporting evidence for its meaning. Without corroboration, leave purpose unconfirmed and do not infer intent, ownership or legitimacy.
The point to remember
Treat the reference as evidence of entered wording and establish the transfer's real purpose from independent transactional and contextual records.
