What can a card-payment record prove?

A card record can establish an attempted or completed event through a card account or token. It describes the payment route, not automatically the cardholder or purchaser.

The record identifies method and lifecycle

Fields can include masked card or token, amount, currency, merchant, category, time, authorisation, card-present status and transaction reference. Issuer or processor data may add terminal, merchant ID, authentication, risk and settlement, plus declines, reversals, refunds or disputes.

Chip-and-PIN, contactless, online, recurring and mobile-wallet routes leave different supporting evidence.

Attribute user and purchase separately

Cards can be shared, stolen or copied; details can be used without the physical card; tokens can belong to registered devices; recurring charges may lack fresh action. Authentication proves the required step, not the human actor.

Compare issuer, merchant, processor and endpoint records with CCTV, order, delivery, receipt and communications. State the card or token event first, then address user and goods obtained.

The point to remember

Use card records to establish payment method and events, then corroborate who used the instrument and what the transaction purchased.
