What is contactless payment?

Contactless payment uses a nearby card or tokenised device to communicate with a terminal. The record identifies the instrument route, not the person presenting it.

Fresh authentication may not occur every time

Lower-value events may proceed without PIN, subject to cumulative limits and risk checks. The instrument may be a physical card, phone, watch or other endpoint carrying a device-specific token.

Useful data includes terminal and merchant, time, amount, card or token ID, contactless indicator, authorisation and any later verification.

Distinguish card from device

Ask the issuer whether the physical card or token was used and obtain provisioning and risk records. Compare CCTV, possession, loss report and nearby transactions.

A stolen card or shared device can produce valid contactless activity. Lack of PIN can be normal and does not by itself prove failure or fraud.

The point to remember

Identify whether contactless use came from the physical card or a provisioned endpoint, then corroborate the person who presented it.
