What is a manual card entry?¶
Manual card entry means details were keyed into a terminal or payment system instead of read from chip, stripe or contactless interface. It records submission method, not why or by whom.
Manual use has legitimate and risky routes¶
A merchant may key details for unreadable cards, telephone orders or permitted fallback. Copied details can also be entered without the genuine card. Relevant records include entry mode, merchant, terminal, time, amount, authorisation and verification.
Establish source and reason¶
Ask the merchant who processed the event, why manual entry was used and what order, receipt or customer records exist. Ask issuer or processor which checks applied and whether activity differed from normal pattern.
Compare communications, CCTV, delivery and endpoint evidence. Distinguish manual terminal entry from ordinary online checkout and report only the supported method and user.
The point to remember
Treat manual entry as evidence of how card details were submitted and investigate who supplied them, why and what transaction followed.
