What is an online card payment?

An online card payment is a card-not-present checkout through a website or application. Acceptance connects a card route to an order, not automatically a cardholder to the purchase or delivery.

Checkout creates several evidence layers

Merchants can hold account, order, billing and delivery data. Processors and issuers may record card or token, IP-related and endpoint data, authentication, risk, reference and status. Stored credentials can avoid re-entry on later purchases.

Names and billing details can be copied or false; one-time-code success still requires human attribution.

Reconstruct account to fulfilment

Preserve merchant account and login, order ID, transaction, device, times, authentication and delivery. Obtain merchant creation, checkout and communication records plus issuer authorisation, token and risk data.

Compare endpoint, email, messages, location and receipt of goods. Report card account, merchant account, device, destination and user as separate propositions.

The point to remember

Follow online card evidence from account and endpoint through checkout and delivery before attributing the purchase to the cardholder.
