Payments & Banking Technical Explainer

Could a card payment be made through a mobile wallet?

Yes. A wallet on a phone, watch or compatible endpoint can use a device-specific token linked to the underlying card account, without presenting the physical card.

Provisioning creates the payment route

Records may show token, endpoint and wallet IDs, setup date, verification, contact details, merchant, terminal and transaction reference. Wallet approval can use endpoint PIN or biometric, which proves completion of device security rather than human identity.

A card can be fraudulently provisioned onto another endpoint if checks are defeated; a legitimate endpoint can be shared, stolen or unlocked.

Join provisioning and transaction evidence

Ask issuer or wallet provider to map token to card and supply provisioning and payment records. Compare ownership, account access, location, CCTV, endpoint artefacts and communications.

Report underlying account, token, endpoint and user as separate layers.

The point to remember

Identify the wallet token and its provisioning endpoint before attributing a mobile-wallet card payment to the cardholder.
