What is a merchant descriptor?

A merchant descriptor is statement text intended to identify a card-payment recipient. It may name a legal entity, parent, processor or abbreviation rather than the customer-facing seller.

Display name and actual transaction can differ

Marketplaces, franchises and subscription services may use central payment accounts. Descriptors can include location, telephone or website fragments and may look unfamiliar on genuine payments.

Trace the provider relationship

Preserve exact text with category, merchant and transaction IDs, card or token, amount and time. Ask issuer or processor which merchant account and acquirer generated it, then obtain order, account, delivery and communication records.

Internet recognition is not enough because descriptors change and facilitators serve several sellers. Report displayed descriptor, legal merchant, processor and actual seller separately.

The point to remember

Use the full descriptor to locate the merchant account and processor, then verify the seller and purchase from native records.
