Why might the merchant descriptor differ from the shop name?¶
Payment systems may display a legal company, franchise owner, parent, processor or marketplace rather than the brand seen by the customer. Difference alone is not evidence of fraud.
Payment arrangements shape the label¶
Centralised merchant accounts and facilitators can serve many outlets or sellers. Abbreviation, location, telephone and configuration further change statement text. A familiar-looking label is also not proof that the expected business received the payment.
Verify the underlying seller¶
Preserve the complete descriptor, category, reference, card or token, amount and time. Ask issuer or processor to identify the account and acquirer, then obtain merchant or marketplace order, customer, delivery and communication data.
Use the descriptor as a route into provider evidence, distinguishing it from legal entity and actual supplier.
The point to remember
Explain descriptor differences through the merchant payment route and verify the real seller and transaction from provider records.
