What can an ATM withdrawal record prove?

An ATM record can establish card or account activity at a terminal and, where recorded, whether cash was dispensed. It does not automatically identify who collected it.

Authorisation and dispense are separate

Fields may include terminal and location, time, amount, card or account, transaction reference, PIN result, failures, enquiries, retention and dispense status. The issuer can record authorisation while the operator journal records physical machine events.

A statement debit does not guarantee successful full dispense; faults, partial dispense and reversal can occur.

Connect the terminal to the user

Preserve exact ATM ID, both provider records and promptly obtained CCTV. Compare card possession, location, travel, witnesses and surrounding activity.

Report account activity and dispense result unless wider evidence identifies the collector.

The point to remember

Use ATM records to establish terminal and cash-dispense events, then identify the collector through CCTV, possession and context.
