What can a cash deposit prove?

A cash-deposit record can establish physical money entering or being offered to an account route. It does not alone establish depositor, source, legitimacy or ownership.

Account credit is only one stage

Bank or terminal data may show account, amount, time, branch or machine, method, reference and provisional, adjusted, rejected or reversed status. Another person can deposit for the holder, and cash-intensive legitimate activity can resemble suspicious patterns.

Establish person and provenance

Obtain slips, cashier notes, identification checks, terminal logs and CCTV. Compare invoices, business records, communications, withdrawals and onward transfers. Denominations and repeated deposits may support context but should not be overread.

Report the account credit and identify depositor, source and purpose only where branch, visual and wider evidence supports them.

The point to remember

Treat cash deposit as evidence of money entering an account and prove depositor, source and purpose through physical and contextual records.
