What is cashback at a merchant?¶
Merchant cashback is cash supplied alongside a card purchase, with purchase and cash often combined in one card total. A statement may not expose the split.
Till and issuer records show different detail¶
Issuer or processor data can show the total, while till and receipt records identify goods and cashback components. Relevant fields include merchant and terminal IDs, transaction reference, staff operator and time.
Authorisation does not prove the cash was handed over or identify its recipient. Another person may use the card or receive the notes.
Reconstruct purchase and cash separately¶
Obtain till, terminal, receipt, staff and CCTV records. Compare card possession, PIN, location and surrounding purchases. Report the retail and cashback amounts independently and identify recipient only from visual and contextual evidence.
The point to remember
Use merchant records to separate cashback from goods and use CCTV and possession evidence to establish who received the cash.
