Payments & Banking Technical Explainer

What records might a payment processor hold?

A processor may hold the identifiers and status events that connect payer, merchant, acquirer and issuer even when it lacks the complete order.

Routing generates detailed records

Data can include merchant and gateway IDs, processor transaction, authorisation and response, amount, currency, times, risk, settlement, refund and dispute. Online records may add endpoint, browser, IP-related, checkout, token and authentication data and payment classification.

These fields can map merchant order to issuer card record and clarify an unfamiliar descriptor or marketplace route.

Preserve mappings and definitions

Retain every processor reference and ask how it links to merchant, acquiring and issuer records, which provider handled each stage and what each time and status means.

Processor routing does not identify purchaser or merchant operator. Obtain order, delivery and user evidence separately.

The point to remember

Use processor records to reconcile payment stages and identifiers, while sourcing purchase and personal attribution from merchant and endpoint evidence.
