What is a checkout session?

A checkout session is the recorded sequence in which a user builds an order and submits payment information. It can contain several attempts and may end without purchase.

Session records show changing choices

Merchant account, guest cookie, endpoint or application may anchor it. Data can include cart, amount, billing and delivery, discounts, IP-related and browser fields and successive payment attempts. Users can change card or address before completion.

Reconstruct session, order and user separately

Preserve session, order and transaction IDs, account, times, endpoint and network data and all changes. Establish whether it was authenticated or guest and its final outcome.

Names can be false and endpoints shared, compromised or remotely controlled. Compare logins, device evidence, communications, authentication and delivery. Report session, order, attempt and receipt as distinct events.

The point to remember

Preserve the full checkout sequence and join its account, endpoint, payment and delivery evidence before identifying the user.
