What is a marketplace payment?

A marketplace payment is a buyer charge handled by a platform that connects the order to one or more third-party sellers. The platform name is not necessarily the seller or final recipient.

Customer charge and seller payout separate

The platform may control checkout, accounts, processing, refunds and later settlement after fees or holds. One charge can support several sellers, and payment to the platform does not prove payout occurred.

Follow platform-native identifiers

Preserve buyer and seller IDs, listing, order, checkout, transaction, delivery, messages, disputes and seller payout account, amounts and dates. Ask the marketplace to allocate customer value to each seller, fee and refund.

Seller accounts can be shared or compromised. Report platform, processor, buyer account, seller account and final destination as distinct roles.

The point to remember

Trace a marketplace charge through order allocation and seller payout before identifying the goods, operator or final recipient.
