Payments & Banking Technical Explainer

What is the difference between a wallet balance and a bank balance?

A wallet balance is value recorded inside a payment service; a bank balance is value recorded on a bank account. They are separate ledgers, not mirrored totals.

External funding can support many internal events

A wallet may receive card or bank funding, refunds, peer payments or gift value. One external transaction can be followed by internal transfers invisible on the bank statement, with a later withdrawal creating another bank event.

Displayed value can include pending, reserved, promotional or restricted components and may be held collectively by the provider.

Reconcile each ledger

Preserve wallet history, funding, internal transfers, fees, restrictions and withdrawals. Ask what balance categories mean and map external and internal events separately.

Holder identities can differ and balance possession does not prove control or benefit.

The point to remember

Reconcile wallet funding, internal activity and withdrawal separately rather than treating the wallet balance as a copy of its linked bank account.
