What records might a gift-card provider hold?

A provider may retain a full lifecycle across purchase, activation, delivery, registration, balance activity and redemption - not merely the card number and current balance.

Issuer and retailer datasets may differ

Purchase records can show retailer, till, receipt, time, value, funding and activation. Digital delivery can add purchaser account, email or phone, endpoint and IP-related data. Account-linked use may produce logins, transfers, balance checks and security changes.

Redemption data can identify store or website, terminal, merchant, order, account, time, amount and remaining balance. Cancellation, replacement, refund, freeze, fraud report and support records may explain later changes.

Request a chronological history

Supply the complete identifier, purchase details, suspected period and linked accounts. Ask providers to define purchase, activation, registration, enquiry and redemption timestamps. Where issuer, processor and retailer are separate, map records across them.

Keep funding source, gift-card identifier, redemption account and actual user distinct.

The point to remember

Obtain the complete issuer and retailer history so each change in gift-card value can be placed in sequence and attributed cautiously.
