What is a wallet address?¶

A wallet address is a network identifier used to send, receive or reference a blockchain asset. It is not the wallet itself and does not permanently identify one person.

Address use depends on network and custody¶

A wallet can generate many addresses. An exchange can rotate deposit addresses or use shared infrastructure, while one address can receive from many users. On-chain activity may expose transactions and balances without revealing the private key or controller.

Address formats differ by network and may be long or case-sensitive, so visually similar strings must not be assumed equal.

Preserve and attribute the exact identifier¶

Record the complete address, network, asset, related hashes, source and observation time. Exchange records, wallet and endpoint artefacts, communications, transaction patterns or proof of control may connect it to a provider or person.

State whether evidence links, attributes or demonstrates control rather than saying an address “belongs to” someone without defining the basis.
