Payments & Banking Technical Explainer

What is a private key?

A private key is secret cryptographic material that can authorise activity for associated blockchain addresses. Anyone obtaining it may be able to move assets, making it both powerful evidence and a security risk.

Key possession shows potential technical control

Keys may exist as text, files, QR codes, hardware records or protected wallet data. They can be shared, stolen, backed up or imported across endpoints. Finding one therefore does not prove its creator, historical user or beneficial owner.

Encryption, passwords or secure hardware may restrict immediate use without changing the key's evidential sensitivity.

Preserve without exposing or exercising it

Record device, file location, application and surrounding account or recovery context. Do not enter the key into a site, test it, include it unnecessarily in screenshots or ordinary reports, or take an action that could move assets.

Use an authorised specialist process where identification or asset protection is required. Distinguish key possession from authorship, transaction use and ownership.

The point to remember

A private key evidences potential technical control; preserve it securely and never test or expose it through routine examination.
