What is a token?¶
A token is a digital unit recorded through an existing blockchain or ledger system. Its displayed name or symbol is not enough to identify the exact asset or establish real-world value.
The host network supplies infrastructure¶
Smart contracts can issue tokens representing payment value, access, governance, ownership claims or digital items. They use host-chain addresses and may require network fees in a different native asset. Imitation tokens can copy names and symbols.
Market display does not prove liquidity, redemption or a sale at that price.
Identify the contract and network¶
Preserve network, contract address, token name and symbol, quantity, wallet addresses and transaction hash. Where the token represents an external entitlement, obtain issuer or contract records needed to explain it.
Report token quantity, host-chain activity, wallet display and claimed market or real-world value separately.
The point to remember
Identify a token by contract and network before interpreting its transfers, ownership or value.
