Payments & Banking Operational Explainer

How should card-payment evidence be worded?

Describe the transaction as processed against a card or token and distinguish the card account, processing method and alleged user.

Processing records do not identify the presenter

Issuer or merchant data may show masked card or token, holder, merchant, amount, authorisation, time, status and whether use was chip-and-PIN, contactless, online or wallet-based. These fields explain processing, not automatically who presented, entered or controlled the credential.

Add the evidence identifying the user

State that a transaction was authorised against a card issued to a named holder or that a linked token was used. Explain CCTV, endpoint, merchant or admission evidence separately.

Do not turn merchant location into cardholder location, and distinguish a wallet token from the physical card. Record possible sharing, theft or cloning and keep authorisation, settlement, reversal and refund distinct.

The point to remember

Word card evidence around the processed credential and attribute its user only from corroborating merchant, endpoint or contextual evidence.
