How should payment screenshots be presented evidentially?¶
Present a screenshot as a captured view with a known source and context, not as a complete provider record or self-proving transaction.
Preserve the full display and provenance¶
Retain the original image and metadata where available. Record source endpoint or account, application or site, acquisition date, displayed time and zone and who captured it. Keep an uncropped version showing account context, reference, status and surrounding entries.
Images may be altered, forwarded or captured from another account, and may omit pending, reversal, refund or currency detail.
Verify the underlying event¶
Compare with provider exports, merchant and issuer records or blockchain identifiers. Possession of an image does not prove account control or completion.
Label exactly what the screenshot depicts, its missing context and any inconsistency, and obtain the underlying provider record where material.
The point to remember
Screenshots provide visual context; provenance and underlying transaction records establish their evidential meaning.
