Can one website use several domain names?¶
Yes. Several domains may redirect to, display or support the same website. That does not automatically prove common control, but it may reveal a connected operation when supported by wider evidence.
Legitimate and suspicious explanations¶
A business may use several domains for:
- different brands or spellings;
- country or language versions;
- marketing campaigns; or
- protection against common misspellings.
Fraudulent operations may also rotate domains when one is blocked or reported, or use similar domains for phishing, cloned shops and short-lived campaigns.
Appearance is not enough¶
Two websites may look identical because they use the same template or platform. Conversely, connected domains may present different branding while sharing infrastructure or administrative records.
Record each domain and complete URL separately. Note:
- whether one address redirects to another;
- whether the visible domain changes;
- whether the content is genuinely identical; and
- when each observation was made.
Build the connection from corroboration¶
Useful links may include:
- shared origin or hosting infrastructure;
- the same registrar account or nameservers;
- repeated contact details;
- matching payment destinations;
- common analytics or advertising identifiers;
- overlapping certificates;
- linked social-media accounts; or
- consistent publishing patterns.
Treat shared hosting and common cloud infrastructure cautiously. A matching IP address alone may be weak because many unrelated customers can use the same service.
Key takeaway
Several domains can lead to one website, and one operation can use many domains. Preserve each address separately and establish the connection from multiple records rather than appearance or IP address alone.
