Who registers a domain name?¶
A domain is registered through an account with a registrar or reseller. The recorded registrant may be connected to the domain, but is not automatically the website operator or offender.
The account may belong to an individual, company, employee, developer, agency or privacy service. A person may have registered it for someone else.
Ask the precise questions¶
Where available, seek:
- account and contact details;
- payment information;
- access and change history;
- support communications;
- transfers and renewals; and
- relevant-time control, not only the current registrant.
Keep registration evidence separate from hosting, publishing, payment and device evidence. Those records may join together, but each supports a different proposition.
The point to remember
Registration records create valuable account and payment leads. They require corroboration before they identify who operated the website or performed the activity.
