What is website hosting?¶
Hosting is the computing infrastructure that stores or delivers a website’s content and functionality. It is separate from the domain registration and from responsibility for the content.
The practical distinction¶
Hosting may be a physical or virtual server, cloud environment or managed platform. Potential records include customer, payment, assigned infrastructure, access, support and creation or change events. Specify the domain, hostname, IP, page and dates when enquiring.
The point to remember
Hosting can identify where and how a service was delivered. It does not automatically identify who created or controlled the content.
