What should I preserve from a website?

Preserve enough to show exactly what was observed, when it was observed, how it was reached and which technical or provider enquiries may follow.

Preserve the exact location

Start with the complete URL, not just the domain or homepage. Include:

  • protocol;
  • hostname and subdomain;
  • path;
  • query parameters;
  • item, account or campaign identifiers; and
  • any original shortened or redirected link.

Preserve timing and context

Record:

  • date, time and time zone;
  • how the page was reached;
  • whether an account was signed in;
  • which account was used;
  • the device, browser or tool;
  • any action required to reveal the content; and
  • surrounding pages, contact details, payment instructions and linked accounts.

Capture the visible page, but also preserve the URL as text.

Preserve technical material proportionately

Where appropriate and lawful, relevant material may include:

  • downloaded files;
  • page source;
  • response headers;
  • linked media;
  • specialist web captures; and
  • records of redirects or embedded services.

Do not submit forms, create accounts, make purchases or interact unnecessarily where that may alter evidence, alert the operator or create legal and operational issues.

Document who captured the material, how it was stored and which organisational continuity process was followed.

Key takeaway

Preserve the exact address, timing, visible content, context and capture method. The aim is a reliable investigative record, not merely a picture of the page.
