How do I record the exact webpage I viewed?¶

Record the complete URL and the circumstances in which the page appeared. A website name identifies a service; it does not identify one particular page or view.

Read the complete address¶

In https://shop.example/item/482?campaign=summer, the protocol is https, the hostname is shop.example, the path identifies item 482, and the query string carries an additional campaign value. Any of those parts may help a provider locate the relevant record.

A useful analogy is a postal address: the domain is the building, while the path and parameters can identify the room, reference number or delivery instruction.

Preserve the address exactly rather than shortening it because part appears meaningless. Record the original link and the final address after any redirect. Take a screenshot including the address bar where possible, but also copy the URL as text.

Add the date, time and time zone, device and browser, signed-in account, steps taken and any action needed to reveal the content. Location, language and account state may explain why another user later receives a different page.

URLs can contain access tokens, email addresses or other sensitive values. Preserve them securely and avoid unnecessarily reproducing them in reports or messages.
