Can a website be hosted from an ordinary broadband connection?¶
Yes. Websites and other services can run from domestic, workplace, educational or small-business internet connections.
The service may run on a server, ordinary computer, router, NAS or another connected system. The public IP may identify the broadband subscriber rather than a commercial hosting customer.
Evidence strategy¶
Useful records may include:
- ISP subscriber and assignment data;
- router forwarding and connected-device information;
- local website files, logs and configuration;
- workplace firewall, DHCP and authentication records; and
- dynamic-DNS, proxy or tunnelling records.
The subscriber or organisation is not automatically the operator. Connections may be shared, systems remotely controlled and devices compromised.
