What should I ask a domain registrar for?¶

Ask for records generated by the domain-registration account, tied to the exact domain and relevant period. The registrar usually cannot supply the website’s content or publishing history.

Separate customer, access and change evidence¶

Customer records may include account details, contacts, verification, billing and payment. Access records may include login IP addresses, session times, password resets, recovery changes and security events. Domain history may include registration, renewal, transfer, nameserver and contact changes.

These categories answer different questions. Payment can link funding; access can show management activity; nameserver changes can explain when the website moved.

Identify whether a reseller or privacy service sits between the registrar and end customer. The accredited registrar may hold only the reseller relationship, requiring a further step.

Provide the domain exactly as registered and state date ranges, timestamps and time zone. Explain the relevant event rather than requesting “all website records,” which may be both overbroad and technically misdirected.

Registrar evidence identifies an account and its use. False details, delegated management, shared credentials and compromise remain possible, so compare it with hosting, platform, payment, communication and device evidence.
