How can I tell who registered a domain in the past?¶

Use registrar and registry history for the exact period. Current details may reflect a transfer, privacy change, expiry or entirely new registration.

Reconstruct the registration lifecycle¶

Registry records can establish creation, expiry, status and responsible registrar. Registrar records may identify the customer account, contacts, payment, access, renewal, transfer and support activity. A reseller or privacy service may add another step before the underlying customer.

Historic public registration databases can provide useful leads, but fields may be redacted, stale, false or collected at uncertain times. Preserve the source and date rather than treating the display as the authoritative account record.

A domain resembles a vehicle registration that can be transferred, lapse and later be issued again: the name may be identical while the responsible account changes.

Separate the registrant - the recorded registration holder - from the person operating the website. A developer may register for a client, details can be misused, and control can change without an obvious public update.

Build a timeline of creation, renewal, contact changes, transfers, expiry and re-registration. Link each period to payment, access and communication evidence.
