What should I preserve from redirects and shortened links?¶

Preserve the original link, every destination in the chain and the context in which it was followed. The final page alone loses evidence carried by the earlier links.

Why the route matters¶

A shortened URL maps a compact identifier to another address. Redirects can then pass through tracking, warning, advertising or authentication services before reaching the destination. Parameters may identify a campaign, account or individual recipient.

It resembles a series of forwarding addresses: the final premises do not reveal who arranged each forwarding step.

Record the exact link as received, its source message or page, date, time and time zone, device, browser and login state. Capture intermediate and final URLs, response warnings, errors and tracking identifiers where lawful and proportionate.

Results can vary by location, device, account, expiry or click count. Avoid repeated uncontrolled clicking, which may change records, consume one-time links or alert an operator. Use a planned capture method and preserve sensitive tokens securely.

The shortening or redirect provider may hold account, creation, edit and click records. Those records can connect the link identifier to a customer and timed requests.
