When should I seek specialist support for a website enquiry?¶

Seek specialist support early when the evidence may disappear, the system is unsafe or unfamiliar, or a technical conclusion will materially affect an operational or legal decision. You do not need to diagnose the whole problem before asking for help.

Situations that justify early support¶

Escalation may be appropriate where:

• a site is changing rapidly or likely to be removed;
• content appears only after login, payment or interaction;
• the site delivers malware or other unsafe material;
• hidden hosting, tunnelling or self-hosting is suspected;
• live servers, routers or unfamiliar equipment may be encountered;
• cloud services cross several providers or jurisdictions;
• logs require correlation across systems or time zones;
• disruption, seizure or covert activity is being considered.

Routine screenshots and open-source checks can still be valuable, but they should not delay preservation or create avoidable exposure.

Ask a defined question¶

A useful request for support states:

• what happened and why it matters;
• the exact website address and relevant period;
• what has already been preserved;
• which providers or accounts are known;
• what decision the technical work must inform;
• any urgency, safety or operational constraints.

“Tell me everything about this website” is difficult to scope. “Can we reliably preserve the personalised page before the account is disabled?” gives the specialist a concrete problem to solve.

Do not wait for the perfect package¶

Early consultation can prevent an investigator from contacting the wrong provider, changing evidence through unnecessary interaction or seizing equipment without an appropriate plan. It can also confirm that a routine approach is sufficient.

Specialist involvement does not transfer ownership of the investigation. The investigator should retain the evidential question, chronology and decision record while the specialist explains the technical method and limitations.
